Radiation Treatments Ended
Mark Garis
When six weeks of radiation and chemotherapy ended today, Mark danced (okay, he strode and smiled) his way out of the hospital Oncology Department! What a relief! Thanks fo God's mercy, he experienced no side effects except recent loss of appetite. The doctor told him to keep his weight up by eating high protein and high fat foods in small amounts, frequently. Peanut butter, eggs, full-cream ice cream and fruited milkshakes were some of the specifics. Mark chuckled and commented that it's the first time in his life that he's been told to eat like that!
There will be a four-week "no treatment" break before he begins the next phase in mid-September. At that point he will receive one week of chemo pills followed by seven weeks of immune-boosting injections (a clinical trial drug, Poly ICLC). Bi-monthly MRIs will determine continuing treatments after that. Thanks for hanging in there with us!

Praise the Lord!
Hi Nan,
Thanks so much for the report. We are so pleased with Mark's progress.
Much love, Esther and Bill Boyer.
We trust and pray that these weeks without treatments are going well. I'd love to be able to send like to send Mark some Versailles ice-cream from El Paraiso, or some treat from Crepes and Waffles.
May the Lord sustain you daily.
Love, Trevor, Sherry, Kyle and Christina
It was nice to visit with you on Sunday evening. One slightly amusing thing I forgot to tell you. I have been telling people that in the event that your illness prohibits you from doing your board work, I would offer to take your place on the Messiah College Board of Trustees. Thus, I suggested to an important campus person that I would be your substitute until you are capable of returning to a full workload. I was surprised that this person’s response (hahaha) when he said “Can you give me a day to think this over?”
Here is the title and the author of the devotional book that Ruth and I are reading. The book is entitled “This Splendid Journey”, written by Joel Nederhood. He now serves as a pastor of worship and preaching in South Holland, Illinois, and as a professor of preaching at Westminster Theological Seminary in California and at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Deer Field, Illinois. Ruth and I highly recommend this book for a daily devotional guide.
With love, we pray for your continuing full recovery.

Hi Mark and Nan,
What good news to read that Mark has completed one round of treatment and can enjoy a bit of a break before the next. You are in our prayers all the time, and especially now as classes begin at Messiah. We look forward to seeing you some time this fall.
